Asia-Pacific region boasts recent influx of millionaires

More millionaires are being minted around the world despite a sputtering global economy – especially in Asia, which now boasts more rich folk than Europe for the first time.

The Asia-Pacific region had 3.3 million people worth a million bucks or more last year – excluding the value of their homes – according to the 15th annual World Wealth Report. It was an increase of about 10% from 2009.

There were 3.1 million millionaires in Europe, a 6% jump, while North America saw an 8.6% rise to 3.4 million.

The report, by Merrill Lynch and consultant firm Capgemini, shows the growing strength of such emerging economies as China and India.

The U.S., Japan and Germany still accounted for more than half of the world’s 10.9 million wealthy people in 2010. China was in fourth place with 535,000.
