Underwater homeowners paying for private mortgage insurance (PMI) on their home loans could qualify for an incentive to stay current on their loans, under an arrangement announced today by one of the nation’s biggest private mortgage insurers.
The PMI Group, Inc. announced today that it would reach out to certain underwater homeowners in hard-hit housing markets to offer them cash incentives for staying current on their home loans. They’re the first mortgage insurer to sign up to use the incentive program, which was developed by New Jersey-based Loan Value Group LLC. According to Frank Pallotta, Managing Partner of Loan Value Group LLC, borrowers will not apply for the program, but will participate by invitation only. Invitees will be chosen based almost entirely on their loan-to-value ratio and geography (targeted housing markets). There are no additional fees to borrowers to participate in the program. She knows how to lead a Girl Scouts troop, tend a garden, get her three kids off to school on time — and replace the breaks in your car.
Wearing tight jeans and sparkly diamond studs, petite, buff, long-haired Audra Fordin is far from anyone’s image of a car mechanic.
But Fordin, 40, not only turns a wrench, she’s the first woman to run Great Bear Auto Repair and Auto Body in Flushing, Queens, a fourth generation family business dating back to 1933.
A rarity in the car biz, Fordin’s on a drive to get women to learn how to pop open the hood and fix it for themselves.

Worries about government debt troubles brewing in both the U.S. and Europe sent stock investors running for cover Monday, with the benchmark Standard & Poor’s index posting its biggest one-day drop in almost six weeks.
In Washington, lawmakers continued to battle over whether to hike the debt ceiling, bickering over taxes and spending cuts as the possibility of a U.S. debt default loomed.
The Treasury has said it has until Aug. 2 before it runs out of money to pay back its debts. Economists have warned that could send interest rates skyrocketing and put the country at risk of another recession.
Eurozone officials were also continuing to hash out a way to keep Greece from default amid growing concerns Italy – the area’s third-biggest economy – could be next on the list to be drawn into the crisis.
Italian stocks tumbled and the cost of insuring Italian debt against default shot to a record high.
“In the short term, in terms of worries – not actual events, but worries – it’s a little bit of a perfect storm for investors,” Oliver Pursche, president at Gary Goldberg Financial Services, told Reuters.
