Facebook has upped the “social” in its social network, announcing new features to its popular chat service and integrated video calling on the website.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg Wednesday announced a partnership with Skype that will allow users to make free video calls to friends, touting his network’s ability to act as a larger platform for a variety of social interactions.
According to Zuckerberg, the partnership pairs the “best technology that’s out there for doing video chat with the best social infrastructure that’s out there, in order to create some really cool new scenarios.”
The new video service is meant to help Facebook compete with Google – which has a similar video chat feature on its new site, Google+ – and with Apple’s FaceTime feature on Mac computers, iPhones and iPads.
The new Facebook service, which was made available Wednesday, could also be a huge boost for Skype, which has about 145 million regular users.
“For us, this makes a lot of business sense,” Skype CEO Tony Bates said at Wednesday’s press conference in Palo Alto, Calif.
